Lietuva Lakrosas made its second appearance at the annual Heritage Cup men’s lacrosse tournament over Memorial Day Weekend (May 27th). The tournament was hosted in Bryn Mawr, just outside Philadelphia. The team also delegated it’s three members to come to Lithuania and show the game here.
The Heritage Cup tournament consisted of eight teams with rosters of North American descendants who represented the nation’s they played for. Our team finished 5th overall after clinching an overtime victory against Israel on Monday morning, and additional wins against Ireland, Poland, while giving up one goal losses to Hungary (finished 3rd) and Puerto Rico (finished 4th).
Ingrained in the Heritage Cup tournament is the idea of raising awareness, support, and exposure for the sport of lacrosse in each team’s respective country. A mission that aligns with the purpose of Lietuva Lakrosas, which aims to cultivate the ideals of good sportsmanship, loyalty, and fair-play among women and men, boys and girls through instruction in the skills of lacrosse.
After the tournament, three members of Lietuva Lakrosas travelled to Lithuania to deliver equipment and run instructional lacrosse clinics in Baisogala, Kėdainiai, Krakės, and Vilnius. The visit culminated in Klaipėda with the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee’s (LTOK) Olimpinė Diena.
It is a one-day event that brings awareness to over 90 different athletic events to the Lithuanian youth. Thousands of Lithuanians enjoyed Olimpinė Diena, while hundreds of those participants were able to pick up a lacrosse stick for the first time and enjoy the excitement for this fast, team-based sport.
